Heartland Back Country Horsemen is a chapter of Back Country Horsemen of Idaho, which is a non-profit organization with 15 chapters spread throughout our beautiful state.

We have been a small Chapter of Back Country Horsemen in the Heartland of Idaho since 1987. We are located in a beautiful, mountainous area of the State and are surrounded by National Forest with many miles of trail available for riding.

We have a mixed age membership, though many are in their retirement life chapter. Some founding members are still active in the Club. Heartland Chapter includes members from Donnelly, McCall, New Meadows, Fruitvale, Council, Indian Valley, and Cambridge. We cover a large area with our small numbers.

Over the years, the Heartland Chapter has been significant in making a difference. We have worked closely with the Payette National Forest in completing various projects such as trail bridges, bog corduroy crossings, trail head developments, a watershed project, trail signing and general trail maintenance. We may have been small in numbers, but we have been big on perseverance over the years.

One project we are particularly proud of is reestablishing historic trails on the Council Ranger District. The project was a series of trails over Council Mountain that would be accessible to trail users from Council, Idaho on the west to Donnelley, Idaho on the east. Our project was granted approval and active and retired Forest Service personnel were very helpful.

Working with old maps and ground research took up the first two years, as our summer time frame is very short in these mountains. Much of the area had been logged, burned, blazed trees few and far between (if any) and considerable criss-crossing by permitted livestock trails hampered Forest Service Trail identification. Portions of the trail were so severely eroded that you could drag stirrup leather on either side of the trail gulleys.

Dogged determination over the years enabled the Club to complete major watershed restoration and reestablish an acceptable trail over Council Mountain. One mile of new trail was also constructed to accommodate more efficient access travel. Completion of this project was due to collaborative partnerships between the Payette National Forest (Council Ranger District), the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation Trails Fund Program and the Heartland Chapter of BCH.

Heartland Chapter has an Adopt-A-Trail Agreement with the Council Ranger District to annually maintain the above trail and others. This includes sign installation, downfall and brush clearing, rock cairns, waterbar maintenance, etc.

The Heartland Chapter also led and partnered in developing the 4-H Horse Arena at the Adams County Fairground.

This project included leveling, weed control, arena surfacing, fencing, bleachers, 300+ feet of French Drain installed for parking, hitching rails, and recognition signing. We have also completed other landscaping improvements at the Fairgrounds. These projects included financial partnership help with the Idaho Horse Board, Adams County Fair Board, Forest Service (USDA Farm Bill), Adams County Road and Bridge department, and numerous local residents.

Collectively and/or independently we keep informed and provide, where appropriate, comments on National Forest Management issues and other decisions that may affect horse users in the State of Idaho.

We generally have monthly meetings on the 3rd Tuesday and rotate the location to ease travel. We try to include a horse-related education topic or speaker at some meetings. For example, we have had Dr. Sarah Metcalf, an Equine Dentist, speak when she is in the area. We also have established a tradition of a fun Christmas party and white elephant exchange. During the snow-free season, we partake in scheduled and/or spontaneous joy rides with each other to see some new country, school a new horse, and just plain riding. Our goal is to have a good time, in some good country, with some good friends, and riding a good horse.

We welcome new ideas, activity suggestions, and encourage anyone with interest or questions to contact one of the officers listed on our Chapter Information page.
